Tonnage can be derived from volume
Volume is calculated in m³ (length x width x depth). 1 m³ = 1.5 t – 2.2 t of crushed stone depending on the grading and degree of compaction; 2.1 tonnes of Type 1 = 1 m³.
1 m³ of well compacted scalpings is heavier than 1 m³ of 75mm clean stone (consider the amount of air spaces!). Our aggregates are always supplied loose on either 6-wheeler (16T) or 8-wheeler (20T) lorries. Collected or delivered — minimum load 1 tonne.
- Tonnes
- 4.5–6.6 t
- Volume
- 3 m³
Under a tonne — our minimum load is 1 tonne.
Aggregates
Building A Strong Foundation, One Aggregate At A Time
In construction, aggregate is a crucial building material that improves the strength and durability of various materials. This term typically refers to coarse or fine particles such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, and recycled concrete. When mixed with cement and water to create concrete or mortar, aggregate gives bulk and structural integrity while also affecting the overall workability of the mixture. The properties of different aggregates can significantly impact everything from drainage capabilities in landscaping projects to load-bearing capacity in foundation works. For example, larger aggregates are often used in road construction due to their ability to withstand heavy traffic loads.
Additionally, choosing the right type of aggregate is essential for achieving specific aesthetic qualities. Coloured aggregates can be used in decorative concrete applications to enhance visual appeal while maintaining functionality. Therefore, aggregate is more than just filler—it is an essential component that defines performance characteristics across various construction activities.
